Record the target age group, brand position, selling season, footwear context and merchandising environment. Online marketplaces also need colors that remain distinguishable in thumbnails; a wholesale presentation may need a compact palette that a retailer can assort without taking excessive inventory. These inputs are more useful than labeling one shade as universally fashionable.
Map every color to a product zone
A simple three-level architecture helps a design team move from inspiration to a technical drawing:
- Base color: the dominant leg, foot or full-body shade that carries most of the visual weight.
- Secondary color: a supporting zone such as the cuff, heel, toe, arch panel or pattern field.
- Accent color: a limited highlight used for a logo, stripe, size code or small motif.
Name the exact start and end of every zone on the artwork. “Navy sock with coral detail” is not enough if production cannot tell whether coral applies to the cuff edge, heel, toe, logo and packaging. Identify the inside and outside leg, left and right orientation, repeat size, number of knit colors per course where relevant, and whether an element is knitted, transferred or otherwise printed.

Use the right color reference for the material
A color code must identify its system and medium. Pantone explains that its Fashion, Home + Interiors system is intended for fashion and soft goods, while its graphics system addresses ink on paper and related graphic applications. Within FHI, TCX identifies cotton textile references. A TCX textile reference may therefore be a more relevant starting point for apparel than a graphics code selected for a printed box.
That does not mean a cotton swatch will reproduce identically on nylon, polyester or an elastic blend. Pantone's Cotton Swatch Card is a physical cotton standard; it is not a promise that every fiber, dye system or knit construction can achieve the same appearance. Ask the mill to assess feasibility and submit an actual yarn or knitted match.
RGB, HEX and on-screen images are useful for artwork exchange and ecommerce planning, but screens vary by device, calibration and viewing conditions. A graphics reference for a hangtag should not silently become the textile standard. Choose a sampling route for each color

Stock yarn can reduce development time, but availability should be reconfirmed for the order and likely reorder window. Custom dyeing may support a closer brand target, yet it can introduce yarn minimums, sample rounds, surcharges and longer lead times. Ask the supplier to separate sock minimums from yarn-dye minimums so the commercial effect is visible.
Design for knitting and stretch
A compression sock is viewed in two states: relaxed off the body and extended during wear. Light fastness may matter for products displayed in sun-exposed windows, used outdoors or expected to retain shade under specified light exposure. Plan bulk shade and repeat orders
Bulk yarn should be traceable by supplier, dye lot and production lot. Agree whether different dye lots may be mixed within one pair, retail pack, carton or shipment. Establish how many bulk samples are checked, from which locations, and against which approved standard. Record visual and instrumental results when both form part of the contract.
For repeat orders, do not rely on a photograph of the first shipment. Retain the governing standard and a protected production reference, then state whether the reorder must match the original master or the most recently approved bulk lot. Aging, handling and storage can change physical references, so identify replacement and reconciliation procedures.
